Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Hamamatsu, Hamamatsu-shi, Shizuoka, Japan 5.2 quake 5 Nov 1:55 pm (GMT +9) An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred around noon on Friday, November 5th, 2021, at 1:55 pm local time near Hamamatsu, Hamamatsu-shi, Shizuoka, Japan, as reported by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a great depth of 370.9 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hamamatsu (pop. 605,100) located 110 km from the epicenter, Iwata (pop. 88,500) 112 km away, Toyohashi-shi (pop. 378,400) 119 km away, Ise (pop. 97,300) 120 km away, Hamakita (pop. 86,500) 122 km away, Kakegawa (pop. 84,000) 123 km away, and Toyokawa (pop. 120,500) 124 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
