Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.6 just reported 5 km southeast of Yujing, Taiwan 4.6 quake 21 Dec 6:59 pm (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred only 13 minutes ago 5 km southeast of Yujing, Taiwan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 9 km beneath the epicenter near Yujing, Tainan, Taiwan, early evening on Tuesday, December 21st, 2021, at 6:59 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Yujing (pop. 16,600) located 5 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tainan City (pop. 771,200) located 33 km from the epicenter, Kaohsiung City (pop. 1,519,700) 58 km away, Douliu (pop. 104,700) 67 km away, and Donggang (pop. 48,100) 72 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Taitung City (pop. 109,600) located 76 km from the epicenter, Nantou City (pop. 105,700) 91 km away, Yuanlin (pop. 124,700) 94 km away, and Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 96 km away.
