The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 31 miles beneath the epicenter near Nikolski, Aleutians West, Alaska, USA, in the afternoon on Tuesday, December 28th, 2021, at 5:23 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nikolski (pop. 18) located 45 miles from the epicenter.
