Moderate 4.7 quake hits near Retalhuleu, Municipio de Retalhuleu, Departamento de Retalhuleu, Guatemala

An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred late at night on Saturday, February 12th, 2022, at 10:43 pm local time near Retalhuleu, Municipio de Retalhuleu, Departamento de Retalhuleu, Guatemala, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Pablo Jocopilas (pop. 20,300) located 84 km from the epicenter, La Gomera (pop. 24,000) 93 km away, and Quetzaltenango (pop. 132,200) 104 km away.
