Small magnitude 3.6 quake hits 40 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States in the evening 3.6 quake 19 Apr 8:32 pm (GMT -10) A very shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported in the evening near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022, at 8:32 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Honaunau-Napoopoo (pop. 2,600) located 16 miles from the epicenter, Pāhala (pop. 1,400) 18 miles away, Captain Cook (pop. 3,400) 20 miles away, Kealakekua (pop. 2,000) 21 miles away, Honalo (pop. 2,400) 22 miles away, Holualoa (pop. 8,500) 25 miles away, Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400) 26 miles away, and Kailua-Kona (pop. 12,000) 29 miles away. In Hilo (pop. 43,300, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
