Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 38 km southwest of Heraklion, Greece in the afternoon4.4 quake 29 Apr 5:01 pm (GMT +3) Just 11 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Friday, April 29th, 2022, at 5:01 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface. The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.6, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.6, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Asimion (pop. 1,300) located 8 km from the epicenter, Mires (pop. 6,400) 15 km away, and Agia Varvara (pop. 2,200) 15 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Zaros (pop. 2,200) located 18 km from the epicenter, Tympaki (pop. 5,300) 24 km away, Gazi (pop. 12,600) 36 km away, Heraklion (pop. 137,200) 38 km away, and Néa Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900) 39 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rethymno (pop. 32,500) located 63 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
