Magnitude 4.7 earthquake strikes near Tomé, Concepción, Region del Biobio, Chile 4.7 quake Ñuble, Chile, May 7, 2022 2:12 am (GMT -4) The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Chile near Tomé, Concepción, Region del Biobio, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Saturday, May 7th, 2022, at 2:12 am local time at a shallow depth of 20 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Tomé (pop. 46,700) located 12 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Penco (pop. 46,100) located 26 km from the epicenter, Talcahuano (pop. 253,000) 30 km away, Chiguayante (pop. 82,500) 47 km away, Coronel (pop. 92,900) 61 km away, Lota (pop. 49,800) 68 km away, Chillan (pop. 150,400) 71 km away, and Cauquenes (pop. 31,400) 80 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Carlos (pop. 31,500) located 84 km from the epicenter.
