Small magnitude 3.8 quake hits 12 miles northwest of Big Spring, Texas, United States early morning 3.8 quake 6 Jun 3:14 am (GMT -5) A very shallow magnitude 3.8 earthquake was reported early morning near Big Spring, Howard County, Texas, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday, June 6th, 2022, at 3:14 am local time at a very shallow depth of 0.7 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Ackerly (pop. 230) located 12 miles from the epicenter, and Big Spring (pop. 28,900) 12 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Stanton (pop. 2,900) located 23 miles from the epicenter, Lamesa (pop. 9,400) 32 miles away, Midland (pop. 133,000) 41 miles away, and Snyder (pop. 11,800) 44 miles away. In Andrews (pop. 13,800, 57 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
