Something I'm currently working on is releasing belief in "Cause and Effect". In other words, releasing the belief that anything I do is a cause for any effect I experience.
There have been so many times in my life that I have thought something was causing an effect, and struggled to change it, only to find out days or years later that the link was not correct. For example, I have a cold because I came into contact with another person who had the cold. Or, I lack vitamin C and so I got a cold. Or if I can get more money I'll be happier. If I can be younger, thinner, prettier, I'll be better. Etc., etc.
Belief in cause and effect is rife in our society. Beliefs like vaccines cause autism, or eggs raise cholesterol, or getting too cold makes you get a cold. Or that curtailing salt and fat prevent health problems. Solid wisdom from one period of time becomes superstition in a later period. There are millions or billions of all sorts of varying beliefs held by people as fact/cause-effect.
I spent most of my life trying to
cause myself to
be (effect) more like the person who gets a prestigious job, or attracts a handsome mate, is an exemplary mother, or is very popular with others, etc. And I spent years chasing a panacea for health. I tried veganism, fasting, cleanses, vitamins, giving up coffee, going to the gym, stopping smoking, etc. But in the end, I continued to be merely who I am and when I stopped trying to cause a change, I'd slip right back into the innateness of me and my "given" tendencies.
It's not that any of these activities I tried, consumptions or habits were necessarily harmful (though they often were annoying or painful). But I do not believe that any of them were causal to any specific state of being or result other than what I already was to begin with. The belief behind the activity is what created any connection to the perception of a "caused" result.
I believe that what truly
causes effects is the will of divine. If "divine" (higher-self) wills an effect, then regardless of the action or belief of the human, the result is what divine willed it to be. If you are to win the lottery, have an accident, meet prince/princess charming, or die on a certain day, then it's just gonna happen, so don't worry. And therefore, I feel it is useful to get to "know self" and become more aware of what it is that divine will wants so you can want that, too, and feel more balanced, at peace, and flowing, since that's what you're getting anyway.

And as such, there isn't much use in trying to cause anything to happen or to go one way or another. It will be what it will be. "Life is a rollercoaster, just gotta ride it," if you know what I mean.
Many people are in-tune with their higher-self/divine-will enough to perceive that which is eventuating (premonitions) and to flow with it. It makes life smoother, but it speeds you along faster and faster, too! Which is why I feel it is a process that unfolds gradually, this awakening to higher self. Otherwise it could send us shooting off the rails (of sanity).
So what can we do then or should we just do - nothing? You can do whatever you like - we do have
free will after all. So we can fight it, hate it, appreciate it, celebrate it, revel in it, or simply accept and allow it. Personally, I advocate that we observe what we receive (the effects) - that which is chosen for us by divine will. And to perceive it in a way that we can feel good about it, or at least in acceptance of it. And to become more aware (by slowing down and not scrambling so much to cause/create an effect) so we can see what it is that our higher (loving) self wants from us. Maybe it is all that is needed simply just
To Be. And maybe it is to continue on as you are. It truly is a process and one that really does need to unfold with a bit of graduation. IMO, a great way to unravel beliefs and to further unfold the mystery of self is to become aware of what you think you think.
