Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 36 km west of Ciudad de San Juan, Argentina in the evening 4.2 quake 20 Aug 9:43 pm (GMT -3) Just 28 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Ciudad de San Juan, Departamento de Capital, San Juan, Argentina. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Saturday, August 20th, 2022, at 9:43 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 110.3 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Villa Basilio Nievas (pop. 4,000) located 18 km from the epicenter, Villa Paula de Sarmiento (pop. 19,100) 36 km away, Ciudad de San Juan (pop. 447,000) 36 km away, Chimbas (pop. 73,800) 36 km away, Albardon (pop. 20,400) 37 km away, Pocito (pop. 41,000) 38 km away, Santa Lucia (pop. 43,600) 40 km away, and Caucete (pop. 33,600) 62 km away.
