Significant magnitude 5.2 quake hits 44 km northwest of Bandar Abbas, Iran around noon 5.2 quake 5 Sep 1:44 pm (GMT +4:30) Iran was shaken near Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 15 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan, Iran, around noon on Monday, September 5th, 2022, at 1:14 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.5. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Devīn (pop. 10) located 18 km from the epicenter, and Bandar Abbas (pop. 352,200) 44 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Qeshm (pop. 25,000) located 68 km from the epicenter, and Mīnāb (pop. 70,800) 109 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
