Significant magnitude 5.0 earthquake 71 km north of Oxapampa, Peru 5.0 quake 2 Oct 8:48 pm (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the evening on Sunday, October 2nd, 2022, at 8:48 pm local time near Oxapampa, Provincia de Oxapampa, Pasco, Peru, as reported by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Rio Negro (pop. 150) located 6 km from the epicenter.
In Santa Rosa de Chuchurras (pop. 140) located 23 km from the epicenter, Buenos Aires (pop. 270) 29 km away, and Ciudad Constitucion (pop. 180) 35 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Amistad (pop. 210) located 43 km from the epicenter, Oxapampa (pop. 12,000) 71 km away, Villa Rica (pop. 7,400) 89 km away, Ambo (pop. 6,900) 99 km away, and Tingo Maria (pop. 53,200) 103 km away.
