An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the evening on Sunday, October 2nd, 2022, at 8:48 pm local time near Oxapampa, Provincia de Oxapampa, Pasco, Peru, as reported by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Amistad (pop. 210) located 43 km from the epicenter, Oxapampa (pop. 12,000) 71 km away, Villa Rica (pop. 7,400) 89 km away, Ambo (pop. 6,900) 99 km away, and Tingo Maria (pop. 53,200) 103 km away.
