Moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake 2 km east of Hechingen, Germany 4.0 quake 16 Oct 6:13 am (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 14 minutes ago 2 km east of Hechingen, Germany, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Hechingen, Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, early morning on Sunday, October 16th, 2022, at 6:13 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.0, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Hechingen (pop. 19,400) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Mössingen (pop. 20,000) 8 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Balingen (pop. 34,400) located 13 km from the epicenter, Rottenburg (pop. 42,700) 15 km away, Albstadt (pop. 46,700) 15 km away, Tübingen (pop. 83,400) 20 km away, and Reutlingen (pop. 112,600) 22 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sindelfingen (pop. 61,300) located 39 km from the epicenter, and Stuttgart (pop. 589,800) 50 km away.
