Significant 5.2 quake hits near Hacienda La Calera, Quillota, Region de Valparaiso, Chile 5.2 quake 15 Oct 11:41 am (GMT -3) Chile was shaken near Hacienda La Calera, Quillota, Region de Valparaiso, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 13 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km beneath the epicenter near Hacienda La Calera, Quillota, Region de Valparaiso, Chile, in the morning on Saturday, October 15th, 2022, at 11:41 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Quillota (pop. 67,800) 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Limache (pop. 35,900) located 33 km from the epicenter, Villa Alemana (pop. 97,300) 39 km away, Quilpué (pop. 130,300) 42 km away, San Felipe (pop. 59,300) 45 km away, Viña del Mar (pop. 294,600) 47 km away, Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) 53 km away, Santiago de Chile (pop. 4,837,300) 97 km away, and Puente Alto (pop. 510,400) 115 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
