An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 occurred early evening on Friday, October 14th, 2022, at 7:47 pm local time near Missoula, Missoula County, Montana, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.2 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ravalli (pop. 76) located 1 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Frenchtown (pop. 1,800) located 18 miles from the epicenter, and Spring Creek (pop. 2,000) 18 miles away. In Pablo (pop. 2,300, 23 miles away), Missoula (pop. 71,000, 28 miles away), Orchard Homes (pop. 5,200, 28 miles away), East Missoula (pop. 2,200, 29 miles away), Polson (pop. 4,700, 29 miles away), and Bonner-West Riverside (pop. 1,700, 30 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
