Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near Irkutsk, Irkutskiy Rayon, Irkutsk Oblast, Russia5.0 quake 14 Oct 8:53 am (GMT +8) Just 15 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Irkutsk, Irkutskiy Rayon, Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Friday, October 14th, 2022, at 8:53 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Posol’skoye (pop. 780) located 38 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Listvyanka (pop. 1,700) located 54 km from the epicenter, Kabansk (pop. 6,300) 71 km away, Rechka Vydrino (pop. 5,200) 76 km away, Pivovarikha (pop. 2,600) 88 km away, Gusinoozyorsk (pop. 24,100) 97 km away, Irkutsk (pop. 586,700) 98 km away, and Shelekhov (pop. 47,500) 109 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
