Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.1 quake hits 70 km west of San Antonio de los Cobres, Argentina early morning5.1 quake 26 Oct 4:52 am (GMT -3) An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred early morning on Wednesday, October 26th, 2022, at 4:52 am local time near San Antonio de los Cobres, Departamento de Los Andes, Salta, Argentina, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 185 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Antonio de los Cobres (pop. 4,000) located 70 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
