Moderate magnitude 4.1 earthquake 55 km northeast of Athens, Greece 4.1 quake 29 Nov 7:23 am (GMT +2) A shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, Greece. According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022, at 7:23 am local time at a shallow depth of 11.9 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.4, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Kouvelles (pop. 44) located 7 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gerakas (pop. 29,900) located 43 km from the epicenter, Kifissia (pop. 47,300) 44 km away, Agia Paraskevi (pop. 59,700) 45 km away, Marousi (pop. 72,300) 46 km away, Chalandri (pop. 74,200) 47 km away, Iraklion (pop. 49,600) 49 km away, Acharnes (pop. 99,300) 50 km away, Athens (pop. 664,000) 55 km away, and Piraeus (pop. 163,700) 64 km away.
