An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 23 minutes ago 21 miles north of Atka, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 98 miles beneath the epicenter near Atka, Aleutians West, Alaska, USA, in the afternoon on Thursday, December 15th, 2022, at 5:09 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 4.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.2.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Atka (pop. 64, 21 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
