An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred only 4 minutes ago 67 km south of Calama, Chile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 97 km beneath the epicenter near Calama, Provincia de El Loa, Antofagasta, Chile, after midnight on Saturday, December 31st, 2022, at 12:31 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sierra Gorda (pop. 480) located 42 km from the epicenter, Calama (pop. 143,100) 67 km away, San Pedro de Atacama (pop. 2,000) 78 km away, and Maria Elena (pop. 4,900) 108 km away.
