A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near Izmir, İzmir, Turkey.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday, February 5th, 2023, at 9:18 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1.

In Seferihisar (pop. 19,600, 34 km away), Urla (pop. 45,200, 36 km away), and Turgutlu (pop. 103,300, 48 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
