Moderate 4.7 quake hits near Heraklion, Crete, Greece

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Heraklion, Crete, Greece, was reported only 21 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 28 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 7:32 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) located 87 km from the epicenter, and Rethymno (pop. 32,500) 96 km away.
