Small magnitude 3.8 quake hits 10 km west of Macerata, Italy early morning 3.8 quake 21 Feb 1:07 am (GMT +1) A magnitude 3.8 earthquake near Macerata, Provincia di Macerata, The Marches, Italy, was reported only 20 minutes ago by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Italy. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 8.9 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Tuesday, February 21st, 2023, at 1:07 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.3. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Passo di Treia (pop. 2,400) located 1 km from the epicenter, Macerata (pop. 30,800) 10 km away, and Tolentino (pop. 16,500) 10 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Osimo (pop. 16,600) located 25 km from the epicenter, Iesi (pop. 37,000) 27 km away, Civitanova Marche (pop. 41,200) 31 km away, Fabriano (pop. 23,200) 35 km away, Ancona (pop. 90,000) 36 km away, and Falconara Marittima (pop. 25,900) 37 km away.
