Moderate yet deep 5.0 quake hits near Obihiro, Obihiro Shi, Hokkaido, Japan
5.0 quake Hokkaido, Japan Region, Feb 20, 2023 3:55 am (GMT +9)

An intermediate magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported early morning near Obihiro, Obihiro Shi, Hokkaido, Japan.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday, February 20th, 2023, at 3:55 am local time at an intermediate depth of 130.4 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 5.5, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
