Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 78 km northwest of Arequipa, Peru 5.0 quake 78 km northwest of Arequipa, Peru, Jun 2, 2023 9:48 pm (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the evening on Friday, June 2nd, 2023, at 9:48 pm local time near Arequipa, Provincia de Arequipa, Peru, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.6, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Lluta (pop. 6,000) located 15 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Yura (pop. 5,700) located 56 km from the epicenter, El Pedregal (pop. 20,100) 56 km away, Cono Norte (pop. 14,500) 64 km away, Cono Norte (pop. 47,300) 69 km away, Selva Alegre (pop. 72,700) 77 km away, Arequipa (pop. 841,100) 78 km away, Jacobo Hunter (pop. 46,100) 81 km away, and Ciudad Satelite (pop. 76,400) 81 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
