Significant 5.4 quake hits near KishtwÄr, Kishtwar, Kashmir, India 5.4 quake 13 Jun 1:33 pm (GMT +5:30) Just 20 minutes ago, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Kishtwār, Kishtwar, Kashmir, India. The tremor was recorded around noon on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023, at 1:03 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 6 km below the surface. The event was filed by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.5. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kishtwār (pop. 20,600) located 19 km from the epicenter. In Bhaderwah (pop. 13,400) located 21 km from the epicenter, and Doda (pop. 17,700) 25 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Udhampur (pop. 80,400) located 69 km from the epicenter, Islamabad (pop. 79,800) 89 km away, Kathua (pop. 48,600) 91 km away, and Pathankot (pop. 174,300) 99 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
