Magnitude 4.6 earthquake strikes near Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia 4.6 quake 19 Jun 8:44 pm (GMT +7) A magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia, was reported only 19 minutes ago by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 9 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Monday, June 19th, 2023, at 8:44 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Kerian (pop. 38,600) located 10 km from the epicenter, Mojokerto (pop. 112,600) 12 km away, Tulangan Utara (pop. 63,900) 12 km away, Soko (pop. 25,500) 12 km away, Sidoarjo (pop. 139,200) 20 km away, and Buduran (pop. 48,200) 21 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Gedangan (pop. 79,200) located 23 km from the epicenter, Bangil (pop. 120,000) 33 km away, and Surabaya (pop. 2,374,700) 35 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
