Significant magnitude 5.0 earthquake 94 km southeast of Minas de Marcona, Peru
5.0 quake 18 Jun 11:15 pm (GMT -5)

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Peru near Minas de Marcona, Provincia de Nazca, Region Ica, only 17 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Sunday, June 18th, 2023, at 11:15 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Lampilla (pop. 11) located 18 km from the epicenter, and Acari (pop. 4,400) 36 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Coracora (pop. 7,400) located 79 km from the epicenter, Tambo (pop. 5,000) 92 km away, Minas de Marcona (pop. 15,500) 94 km away, San Juan de Marcona (pop. 12,800) 94 km away, Puquio (pop. 10,500) 95 km away, and Nazca (pop. 23,600) 105 km away.
