Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes near Korsakov, Korsakovskii, Sakhalin Oblast, Russia 5.6 quake 24 Jun 4:39 am (GMT +11) A very deep magnitude 5.6 earthquake was reported early morning near Korsakov, Korsakovskii, Sakhalin Oblast, Russia. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, June 24th, 2023, at 4:39 am local time at a great depth of 317.6 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.6 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.6, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Korsakov (pop. 35,100) located 96 km from the epicenter, Makubetsu (pop. 25,900) 112 km away, Wakkanai (pop. 41,600) 121 km away, and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (pop. 176,500) 131 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
