Significant magnitude 5.5 quake hits 19 km northeast of Kozan, Turkey in the morning 5.5 quake 25 Jul 8:44 am (GMT +3) An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred in the morning on Tuesday, July 25th, 2023, at 8:44 am local time near Kozan, Adana, Turkey, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.4, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at magnitude 5.6, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 5.6, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 5.3, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kozan (pop. 88,100) located 19 km from the epicenter. In Kadirli (pop. 70,200) located 26 km from the epicenter, İmamoğlu (pop. 31,900) 44 km away, Ceyhan (pop. 96,300) 63 km away, Göksun (pop. 34,200) 68 km away, and Bahçe (pop. 19,600) 70 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Kahramanmaraş (pop. 376,000) located 85 km from the epicenter, Dörtyol (pop. 56,500) 86 km away, and Adana (pop. 1,249,000) 87 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
