A moderately shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported after midnight near Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Friday, August 4th, 2023, at 12:39 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 64 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
