An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred only 15 minutes ago 6 km southwest of Kiruna, Sweden, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 11.4 km beneath the epicenter near Kiruna, Kiruna Kommun, Norrbotten, Sweden, early evening on Monday, August 7th, 2023, at 7:39 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kiruna (pop. 17,000) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Tuolluvaara (pop. 980) 9 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jukkasjärvi (pop. 610) located 20 km from the epicenter, and Svappavaara (pop. 400) 42 km away.
