Small magnitude 2.9 earthquake 24 km northwest of Aosta, Switzerland 2.9 quake Switzerland: Bourg-Saint-Pierre VS Aug 17, 2023 11:10 pm (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 occurred only 7 minutes ago 24 km northwest of Aosta, Switzerland, the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Aosta, Valla d'Aosta, Aosta Valley, Italy, late at night on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, at 11:10 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Bourg-Saint-Pierre (pop. 210) located 2 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Orsières (pop. 2,700) located 12 km from the epicenter, Bagnes (pop. 6,600) 16 km away, Verbier (pop. 2,000) 18 km away, Martigny-Combe (pop. 1,700) 21 km away, Martigny-Ville (pop. 14,800) 22 km away, Aosta (pop. 32,300) 24 km away, Saxon (pop. 3,500) 24 km away, and Fully (pop. 5,900) 24 km away.
