Moderate magnitude 4.9 quake hits 72 miles southwest of Sand Point, Alaska, United States early morning 4.9 quake 10 Sep 2:03 am (GMT -11) A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Sand Point, Aleutians East, Alaska, USA, was reported only 14 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Sunday, September 10th, 2023, at 2:03 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sand Point (pop. 1,100) located 72 miles from the epicenter, and King Cove (pop. 1000) 75 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
