Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 9 km southwest of Silchar, India early afternoon 4.4 quake 9 Sep 3:48 pm (GMT +5:30) India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in India near Silchar, Cachar, Assam, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Saturday, September 9th, 2023, at 3:18 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 43 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Silchar (pop. 152,400) located 9 km from the epicenter, Badarpur (pop. 11,000) 19 km away, Hailākāndi (pop. 31,000) 20 km away, and Lakhipur (pop. 12,900) 27 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Karimganj (pop. 55,300) located 41 km from the epicenter, Haflong (pop. 40,000) 53 km away, and Kolasib (pop. 25,000) 60 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
