Small magnitude 3.1 quake hits 30 km southwest of Mont-de-Marsan, France after midnight

A very shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported after midnight near Mont-de-Marsan, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.
According to France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the quake hit on Saturday, September 9th, 2023, at 12:33 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Saint-Cricq-Chalosse (pop. 610) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Hagetmau (pop. 4,800) 6 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Saint-Sever (pop. 4,900) located 15 km from the epicenter, Orthez (pop. 11,900) 20 km away, and Mont-de-Marsan (pop. 36,200) 30 km away.
