Small 3.5 quake hits near Oia, Kykládes, South Aegean, Greece

A very shallow magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported in the morning near Oia, Kykládes, South Aegean, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Monday, September 18th, 2023, at 9:46 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Monolithos (pop. 180) located 12 km from the epicenter, Thera (pop. 2,400) 13 km away, Oia (pop. 3,400) 14 km away, and Messaria (pop. 1,200) 14 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Emporeio (pop. 1,900) located 18 km from the epicenter, and Ios (pop. 2,000) 33 km away. In Naxos (pop. 7,100, 67 km away), Paros (pop. 5,300, 72 km away), and Naousa (pop. 2,600, 72 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
