Moderate magnitude 4.1 quake hits 15 km northwest of Angra do Heroismo, Portugal in the afternoon

A very shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Angra do Heroismo, Angra do Heroísmo Municipality, Azores, Portugal.
According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Monday, September 25th, 2023, at 4:47 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the Institue of Volcanology and Risk Mitigation (IVAR), University of the Azores, which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake. A third agency, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Santa Barbara (pop. 1,300) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Biscoitos (pop. 1,400) 9 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Angra do Heroismo (pop. 12,000) located 15 km from the epicenter, Porto Judeu (pop. 2,500) 23 km away, São Sebastião (pop. 2,100) 24 km away, Praia da Vitoria (pop. 6,100) 24 km away, and Porto Martins (pop. 1000) 26 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Calheta (pop. 3,800) located 61 km from the epicenter.
