Significant 6.5 quake hits near Herat, Herat District, Afghanistan 6.5 quake 11 Oct 5:11 am (GMT +4:30) A shallow magnitude 6.5 earthquake was reported early morning near Herat, Herat District, Afghanistan. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Wednesday, October 11th, 2023, at 4:41 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Herat (pop. 272,800) located 34 km from the epicenter, Karukh (pop. 17,500) 45 km away, Chahār Burj (pop. 11,900) 45 km away, Qarah Bāgh (pop. 12,400) 46 km away, Zindah Jān (pop. 10,100) 50 km away, and Kuhsān (pop. 12,100) 86 km away. In Kafir Qala (pop. 18,100) located 98 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
