The quake hit at a great depth of 549 km beneath the epicenter near Oran, Departamento de Orán, Salta, Argentina, in the evening on Monday, October 9th, 2023, at 9:13 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms.
