Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 3 km northeast of Ashikaga, Japan 5.0 quake 15 Oct 6:14 pm (GMT +9) Japan was shaken near Ashikaga, Ashikaga Shi, Prefectura de Tochigi, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 22 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 163 km beneath the epicenter near Ashikaga, Ashikaga Shi, Prefectura de Tochigi, Japan, early evening on Sunday, October 15th, 2023, at 6:14 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ashikaga (pop. 159,700) located 3 km from the epicenter, Ōta (pop. 152,100) 11 km away, Sano (pop. 82,500) 12 km away, Kiryū (pop. 110,200) 12 km away, Tatebayashi (pop. 81,300) 14 km away, Tochigi (pop. 82,100) 25 km away, Oyama (pop. 159,900) 31 km away, Utsunomiya (pop. 449,900) 44 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 77 km away, and Kawasaki (pop. 1,306,800) 96 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
