An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 12 minutes ago 66 km northwest of Kathmandu, Nepal, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Kathmandu, Bagmati Province, Nepal, early morning on Sunday, October 22nd, 2023, at 6:54 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Barhaghare (pop. 35) located 8 km from the epicenter.
In Bharatpur (pop. 107,200) located 40 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kirtipur (pop. 44,600) located 63 km from the epicenter, Hetauda (pop. 84,800) 65 km away, Kathmandu (pop. 1,442,300) 66 km away, Patan (pop. 183,300) 66 km away, Madhyapur Thimi (pop. 83,000) 73 km away, Pokhara (pop. 200,000) 81 km away, Panauti̇̄ (pop. 27,600) 89 km away, and Wāliṅ (pop. 21,900) 94 km away.
