According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday, October 23rd, 2023, at 7:42 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Isleton (pop. 830) located 1 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Oakley (pop. 39,800) located 13 miles from the epicenter, Antioch (pop. 110,500) 15 miles away, Brentwood (pop. 59,000) 17 miles away, and New York of the Pacific (pop. 69,400) 17 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Elk Grove (pop. 166,900) located 21 miles from the epicenter, Stockton (pop. 305,700) 23 miles away, Fairfield (pop. 113,000) 23 miles away, Sacramento (pop. 490,700) 29 miles away, and San Francisco (pop. 864,800) 51 miles away.
