Significant magnitude 5.8 earthquake 79 km southwest of Escuintla, Guatemala 5.8 quake Guatemala Dec 14, 2023 11:55 am (GMT -6) The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.8 quake in Guatemala near Escuintla, Municipio de Escuintla, Departamento de Escuintla, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Thursday, December 14th, 2023, at 11:55 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 60 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Concepcion (pop. 11,100) located 24 km from the epicenter, Pueblo Nuevo (pop. 18,200) 27 km away, La Gomera (pop. 24,000) 46 km away, Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa (pop. 112,800) 57 km away, Escuintla (pop. 103,200) 79 km away, and Quetzaltenango (pop. 132,200) 85 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Chimaltenango (pop. 82,400) located 97 km from the epicenter, Mixco (pop. 473,100) 113 km away, and Guatemala (pop. 994,900) 122 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
