Just 18 minutes ago, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck near San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded around noon on Wednesday, December 27th, 2023, at 12:05 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 3.5 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Avila Beach (pop. 1,600) located 5 miles from the epicenter, and Los Osos (pop. 14,300) 6 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Luis Obispo (pop. 47,300) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Arroyo Grande (pop. 18,100) 14 miles away, Atascadero (pop. 29,800) 18 miles away, and Nipomo (pop. 16,700) 22 miles away. In Paso Robles (pop. 27,200, 27 miles away), Santa Maria (pop. 105,100, 28 miles away), and Orcutt (pop. 28,900, 32 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
