Significant magnitude 5.6 earthquake 23 km northwest of Nanao, Japan 5.6 quake 6 Jan 5:26 am (GMT +9) An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred only 9 minutes ago 23 km northwest of Nanao, Japan, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 11.7 km beneath the epicenter near Nanao, Ishikawa, Japan, early morning on Saturday, January 6th, 2024, at 5:26 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Nanao (pop. 45,300) located 23 km from the epicenter. In Himimachi (pop. 54,500) located 43 km from the epicenter, Takaoka (pop. 170,100) 55 km away, Tsubata (pop. 38,600) 62 km away, Kanazawa (pop. 458,900) 72 km away, Nonoichi (pop. 48,400) 79 km away, and Matsutō (pop. 68,200) 82 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Komatsu (pop. 109,000) located 97 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
