Significant magnitude 5.0 earthquake 33 km southwest of Kholmsk, Russia 5.0 quake 20 Jan 3:57 am (GMT +11) Russia was shaken near Kholmsk, Kholmskii, Sakhalin Oblast, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 21 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Kholmsk, Kholmskii, Sakhalin Oblast, Russia, early morning on Saturday, January 20th, 2024, at 3:57 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Nevelsk (pop. 17,000) located 22 km from the epicenter, Pravda (pop. 2,400) 24 km away, Kholmsk (pop. 32,700) 33 km away, and Gornozavodsk (pop. 5,600) 34 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Shebunino (pop. 1,200) located 48 km from the epicenter, Aniva (pop. 8,000) 63 km away, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (pop. 176,500) 78 km away, Korsakov (pop. 35,100) 84 km away, and Dolinsk (pop. 12,000) 97 km away.
