Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 39 km southwest of Hualien City, Taiwan 5.0 quake 29 Jan 2:11 am (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred early morning on Monday, January 29th, 2024, at 2:11 am local time near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 29 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 39 km from the epicenter, Puli (pop. 86,400) 56 km away, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 81 km away, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 81 km away, Nantou City (pop. 105,700) 82 km away, Douliu (pop. 104,700) 89 km away, Yuanlin (pop. 124,700) 92 km away, and Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 92 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
