The Philippines was shaken near Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 only 8 minutes ago, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 69 km beneath the epicenter near Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, Philippines, in the morning on Thursday, February 29th, 2024, at 8:10 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.6 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hinatuan (pop. 10,100) located 68 km from the epicenter, Bislig City (pop. 67,600) 73 km away, Tagbina (pop. 10,700) 86 km away, Lianga (pop. 13,600) 97 km away, and Monkayo (pop. 51,400) 119 km away.
