Small tremor of magnitude 3.6 just reported 12 miles southwest of Glenmore Park, New South Wales, Australia 3.6 quake 8 Mar 8:53 pm (GMT +11) An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred in the evening on Friday, March 8th, 2024, at 8:53 pm local time near Glenmore Park, Penrith Municipality, New South Wales, Australia, as reported by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Silverdale (pop. 3,600) located 7 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Glenmore Park (pop. 22,900) located 12 miles from the epicenter, Liverpool (pop. 27,500) 25 miles away, Blacktown (pop. 46,900) 26 miles away, Glenwood (pop. 16,000) 27 miles away, Westmead (pop. 17,800) 29 miles away, and Parramatta (pop. 26,900) 29 miles away. In Sydney (pop. 4,627,300, 41 miles away), and Wollongong (pop. 292,200, 43 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
